Diego Martin Senior was taught a valuable lesson about Championship football on Tuesday at the Hasley Crawford Stadium, when they were drubbed 5-0 by North Zone Champions Mucurapo Senior in the RBTT Intercol quarterfinals. Mucurapo will face QRC in the semifinals on Saturday. The league champions started off the game in total control, but had to wait until the 20th minute to get their opening goal despite having the lion’s share of possession. The first goal came from Kevon Piper who was the recipient of a beautiful defense splitting flick on pass from the talented Kevin Molino. Piper’s well placed finish gave Andrew Waldron absolutely no chance in the Diego Martin goal.

Mucurapo only had to wait two more minutes to get their second goal, with Molino again the creator, this time with a beautifully weighted pass to find Piper who’s finish went in off Waldron’s legs. Mucurapo were definitely flowing now and in the 25th minute Ricardo Peltier got his name on the score-sheet when his snap shot from outside of the penalty box beat the outstretched keeper to take his team’s lead to three goals. Molino got himself on the scoreboard in the 41st minute, when his shot which should have been dealt with by the goalkeeper but somehow sneaked through his hands and into the back of the net, giving Mucurapo a 4-0 half time lead.

In the second half Mucurapo were guilty of letting go their control of the game, and Diego Martin began creating some opportunities of their own. It was still Mucurapo who found the net however, when Piper broke down the left side of the field on a swift counter attack and his perfectly placed cross found an unmarked Fabien Thomas, and the substitute was left with the simple job of tapping the ball into the goal taking the score to 5-0.

Selris Figuero, Mucurapo’s coach was pleased overall with Mucurapo’s performance saying that the team implemented his tactics well, but were still at times a bit over confident and tended to relax at points in the game, which won’t be acceptable when they face more disciplined opposition. Heading into the future games he is pleased with his team, but wishes he had just a little bit more depth on the bench to cover all positions satisfactorily.
