‘The Tigers’ went down on 2-1 to Fatima College in a hard fought game at the St. Anthony College Grounds. This result means that Fatima overtakes St. Anthony’s and moves into second spot in the North Zone group, while ‘the Tigers’ slip into fourth place.
Both teams created few chances in a scrappy affair in the first half, with St. Anthony’s having the slight edge in possession in the early stages. Fatima eventually settled midway in the half, and a quick counterattack saw them earn a penalty when Elton Douglas committed a rash challenge on Fatima striker Sherron ‘Tiny’ Joseph, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot. Stephen Knox stepped up to take the spot kick and his attempt was stopped by St. Anthony’s goalkeeper Kevin Mussio, but the resulting rebound fell to the feet of the speedy Jean-Luc Rochford who put the rebound into the back of the net and thought he had gotten his team’s first goal. However the referee judged that an infringement had taken place and had disallowed the goal. Both teams eventually went into the half time break still searching for that all important first goal.
Four minutes after the resumption, St. Anthony’s College got the opening goal of the game courtesy Chivalous George, who took a well placed shot to beat the keeper and put his team in the lead. The lead was short lived however, as five minutes later the St. Anthony’s goalkeeper was adjudged to have stepped out of his penalty box while attempting to throw out the ball. The ensuing free kick was hit straight at the wall, but an alert Sherron Joseph was first to react and gave the keeper no chance with the rebound to draw his team level in the 53rd minute.
Both teams then went on the offensive searching for the game winning goal. In the 62nd minute, Jean-Luc Rochford played a good give-and-go with his teammate and rifled a shot past the helpless Mussio. This time the referee let his goal stand and it was enough to give his team three points as they look to make up ground on league leaders Mucurapo. |
