East Zone Secondary School Football League action kicked off today at WASA Grounds where newly promoted Trinity College upset the home team and First Division regulars, Hillview College. Goals on either side of halftime from Shakir Cole and Kevon John gave Trinity the shock victory in a game where the new boys dominated from start to finish.
It was actually Hillview that started off the brighter of the two teams in the opening minutes. Trinity eventually settled down and their stronger physical presence allowed them to have better control of the game. They struck in the 8th minute through winger Shakir Cole, when he was first to react to a loose ball just outside the penalty area and blasted his left footed shot high into the corner of the net, giving Hillview goalkeeper, Quinn Bess, absolutely no chance.
Trinity continued to have the better of the exchange as the first half wore on, but were unable to add to their tally before the break. Hillview rarely threatened, after being outplayed for large portions of the game, but could have equalized on a couple of forays forward after some slack defending from the Trinity defenders gifted the Hillview attackers with some possession when the ball was cleared unconvincingly or mis-controlled. The teams headed into the interval with Trinity hanging on to their slender lead.
The second half resumed in much the same fashion as the first with Trinity continuing to look the more comfortable team. It came as no surprise when they doubled their advantage in the 62nd minute courtesy of Kevon John when he skillfully dribbled his way into the Hillview penalty box and unleased a powerful drive, low and out of the reach of Bess’ outstretched arms. Five minutes later, Trinity skipper, Marvin Springer could have made the score 3-0, but was unlucky after beating several defenders when he pushed the ball just a bit to far at the end of the marvelous run which allowed Bess’ to clear the ball out of danger.
Hillview failed to mount a serious comeback attempt and the Trinity team had a rather surprisingly relaxing end to the fixture to collect all 3 points and now sit on top of the East Zone with 3 points. Trinity are again on the road for their next fixture when they battle Arima on Monday 8th Sept, while Hillview face a stern test on the road against San Juan on Wednesday 10th Sept.
In other East Zone action taking place on Friday 5th Sept, East Zone giants St. Augustine travel to Arima while Toco host San Juan, the defending East Zone champs.
