The rescheduled fixture between Mucurapo Secondary and Trinity College turned out to be quite a spectacle as 'Compre' came from two goals down to tie the match and get that precious point to give them the North Zone league title.
The game meant a lot to both teams for contrasting reasons. Mucurapo needed just one point to clinch the North Zone League title and a place in the Big 5 Competition, while Trinity College needed just one point to ensure that they would not be relegated, so the stage was set.
Judging from the early exchanges, it was hard to determine which team was near the top of the league and which one was at the bottom. Both teams came out playing hard in difficult conditions at Moka.
Trinity got their shock opening goal in the 38th minute when Mikhail Dindial fired a shot to the left of Mucurapo goalkeeper Michael Duff, who could only parry the ball straight back into the path of Dindial who made no mistake with the rebound.
At the half time interval Trinity was leading 1-0, much to the delight of the home fans, and the few Fatima College players that went to witness the match.
The Trinity College supporters both regular and adopted must have thought they were dreaming when the home team doubled their lead with another Dindial strike.
Dindial showed some individual skill and composure when he collected a through pass, beat the last defender and deftly chipped the ball over the advancing Duff in the Mucurapo goal.
'Compre' started to play with more urgency, as the reality of coming so close but yet so far dawned upon them.
In the 78th minute, Terrance Clarke pulled one back for the visitors when he capitalized on some loose marking from the Trinity defenders, who were all caught out of position when Johan Peltier squared the ball across the box. Clarke had the simplest of tasks, which he gleefully took as he tapped the ball into the net.
Time began to tick away and 'Compre' seemed destined to suffer a shock defeat, when Mutar Taylor came to the rescue with two minutes left in regulation.
A long clearance up field found Taylor unmarked on the right hand side of the goal area. He cut in and slipped the ball past the advancing Zane Coker in the Trinity Goal much to the disbelief of the travelling Fatima (now Trinity) supporters.
Not long after the final whistle blew, sparking wild celebrations from both teams.
Mucurapo are now the 2008 North Zone League Champions and Trinity College are now guaranteed to play in the Championship Division in 2009.
'Compre' now face Central Zone Champions Carapichaima at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium on Thursday in the first match of a double header.
